Magical Orchid Experience at NYBG is Ultimate Tour of Gotham! Romantic Orchid Nights Launches Soon

The annual Orchid Show at The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) is often aptly described by the Garden as an “escape from winter’s chill.”  And while I obviously, greatly concur with that, I also suggest that the Orchid Show is so entertaining, immersive  and educational, too, that visiting with no regard at all to the capricious weather is the way to go! In fact, you’ll want to visit several times: rain or shine ~ day or night as there’s just so much to see and enjoy.  With Orchid Nights launching March 21st, you can add “romantic” to the experience, as well. This year’s Orchid Show, as I wrote back when the show opened, is a Love Letter to Gotham.

The Orchid Show: Mr. Flower Fantastic’s Concrete Jungle, the 23rd edition of the annual celebration of all things orchids at the New York Botanical Garden is a kind of fever dream that the anonymous/mysterious, native New Yorker, Mr. Flower Fantastic, conjured with special wit, whimsy, and superior story telling to capture a Gotham that is somewhere over the rainbow….

Walking through the homage to the Big Apple you see familiar streetscapes of a bus stop with Routes whose names you’ll surely want to travel to, including Vanda Blvd, Dendrobium Drive, Phalaenopsis Street and Oncidium Avenue;

Check The Flower Routes!

A Laundromat with Slipper Orchids peeking out from the glass door,

A dumpster brimming with orchids:

And fire hydrants spew orchid blooms:

A subway platform at Orchid Avenue (my dream stop… Hey, I take the 4 and 5!), festooned with nature’s graffiti:

A car wash scrubbing an electric “yellow submarine” of a taxi with Orchid Plates:

A fanciful steam duct:

A Newstand with whimsical floral titles such as “Vanity Fleur” and Vine (instead of “Time”), Rooted instead of “Wired”, and The New York “Vines”!

A community park bench:

And all are designed and displayed in transformative orchid style…  It’s so gobsmackingly creative.

It’s so fun!  And pretty.

“The exhibition offers architectural installations evoking familiar urban scenes reimagined in vibrant floral forms, plus bold color palettes and textures that capture the rhythm and diversity of New York City life. Created around Mr. Flower Fantastic’s signature aesthetic that combines flowers, sculpture, and pop culture, this year’s Orchid Show presents a striking reinterpretation of botanical design.”

Throughout The Orchid Show are scads, er, coteries, of all kinds of orchid varieties and fashionable plant partners, showcasing the exquisite shapes, breathtaking colors, and alluring fragrances of one of the world’s most exotic flowers: the Orchid.  (enjoy this Gallery)

While immersed in thousands of flowers, visitors learn about orchids in the wild and NYBG’s ongoing worldwide orchid research and conservation. Orchids aren’t just found in exotic locations such as the tropics; they’re everywhere, including right here in New York State, and NYBG scientists are still discovering new species. On select weekend dates throughout the exhibition, visitors may learn about orchids and their care from NYBG’s horticulture staff.

At the recent PHS Flower Show, we learned about our American First Ladies and their legacy of wearing the beautiful Cattleya Orchid, aka, The Prom Orchid!
